Christmas at The Goring Hotel

by Nathan Rollinson

It is only a few days until Christmas, the excitement is filling up. Counting down the days, with help from my Charbonnel ‘et Walker advent calendar. Over this special Christmas article, I was collaborating with The Goring Hotel.

If you haven’t heard of it, well worry not, I am going to explain all about ‘one of my favourite hotel’ in this special Christmas post.

The Goring’ a luxury boutique ‘edwardian era’ hotel in the heart of Belgravia, London, whose had been run by a family since 1910. The Goring was opened by Jeremy Goring’s great-grandfather Otto Richard Goring, on 2 March 1910.

With only 69 luxurious suites and rooms, The Goring is affectionately known as a “Baby Grand”. With a private walled garden behind the hotel — ‘one of the largest private gardens in the capital’ after the gardens of Buckingham Palace and it is widely believed, The Goring was the first hotel in the world to have an en-suites and central heating installed in each and every bedroom.

Impressive right?

The Hotel was passed through four generations of the Goring family, it also is known as London’s last family-owned luxury hotel, favourited by the British Royals.

The only hotel to have been awarded a Royal Warrant for hospitality services. If you want to sleep and dine like the royals, The Goring is the place to stay!

Upon my arrival on a chilling morning, keeping myself warm with a beautiful black cashmere ‘Trench’ coach from Burberry.

Burberry’s trench coat is well recognised for it’s sleek, classic and refined aesthetic. The original Burberry trench coat was designed in 1912 by Thomas Burberry to keep the military personnel in the WW1 protected against wind and rain. A piece of clothing that was never intended to become a worldwide style icon. Each and every “easy-to-spot” Burberry trench coat, requires over 100 skilled processes, in Castleford, a town in the north of England. And it takes approximately three weeks to make one trench coat.

I was wearing the trench coat in pure cashmere with smart leather trims to the belted waist and cuffs. Designed in their signature Kensington fit, it is a timeless style with a tapered waist, to wear over tailoring.

A very classic coat goes well with any clothing from casual to smart attire. A strong statement to your whole outfit look. The range of trench coat is well varied, plenty of colours and materials to choose.

Checking-in at The Goring with my sophisticated suitcase from Hartmann, an elegant and modern luggage, made by the finest aluminium. This material is perfect for anyone who wants to combine the highest durability and protection with a touch of luxury. Of all hard side materials, aluminium has the most “character” – like prestigious leather it gets its own “patina” resulting from dents and other signs of its usage, looking even better after some time. Leather-look stripe around the suitcase for a refined finishing touch. Hartmann has used the Ducord stripe pattern for nearly 100 years to differentiate its suitcases from other brands. This distinctive, trademarked design is synonymous with the Hartmann brand.

Ushered to the regal lobby of The Goring from the doormen, dressed just like how British Gentlemen were wearing back in the old times, sharing a joke with me.

Overwhelmed with numerous of pleasant staff surrounding around the lobby, welcoming me to The Goring. Female receptionists in a cream smart knee-length jacket, black dress, pearl necklace and chignon bun, how very ladylike!

And the butlers, in rich red jacket with gold buttons “How Quintessentially British

The new suites are decorated by Nina Campbell and guest-rooms by Tim Gosling (formerly with David Linley) and Russell Sage, featuring bespoke historic fabrics by Royal Warrant Holders – Gainsborough Silks, for the wall-coverings.

I was ushered to the 5th floor by the receptionist, walking through the corridors, to massive double doors, opening widely, I could see how vast the suite is, in front of me the living room. An oversized sofa velvet, rich in caramel with perfect fluffed cushions.

To my right, a large dining room with a piano and a balcony behind the piano overlooking the gardens. A moment of calmness.

Walking through the back, to the living area, passing the large french doors, Buckingham Palace was in my sight! The living room has everything you will need! A butler on call, nothing is too big or too small. A powder room adjacent to the living room were covered in red silk, is a match that adorned the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace.

The master bedroom of The Royal Suite are gorgeous and the walls are lined with the same beautiful silk that graced the First Class Dining Room of RMS Titanic 1912!

A magnificent four poster bed, with exquisite antique furniture. A full marble bathroom with a portrait of Queen Victoria in the shower protected with aircraft safety glass!

“The signature four-room Royal Suite is arguably the most glamorous accommodation option in England”— Forbes Travel Guide, 2016.

One thing I loved about The Goring – Each room had a cuddly ‘Baaa-bara Sheep’ on the bed where you can take him home after. That’s personalised and it was invented by George Goring, he wanted to make the hotel ‘unique’ and none more so than the prevalence of sheep scattered throughout the hotel. “Anywhere we go in the world and talk to people who knew of The Goring, they will mention the sheep” – George Goring

The lounge itself bought a “wow” factor, decorated in deep maroon with gold, the walls were covered in rich silk and dazzling chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

The Bar at The Goring has been gloriously and theatrically transformed by designer Tim Gosling, inspired by Empress Josephine’s Chateau de Malmaison – with gilded ceiling, swagged curtains and bespoke carpets. A room adjacent to The Bar, a glossy mustard drawing room, perfect for Afternoon Teas with the perfect view of The Gardens and The Terrace, for this season it was transformed as St. Moritz inspired bar “The Cresta” in collaboration with Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, a perfect place to unwind after a long day of shopping in the neighbours of Knightsbridge.

I was in love with the interiors in The Cresta, and the drinks are very winter themed and my favourite is the Cresta Punch.

The Cresta Bar will stay until early Spring 2017.

There are so many histories that are rich in the hotel, I could listen to it all day.

A well-known hotel, perfect location, beautifully decorated, well preserved and friendly staff with impeccable service. The Goring has it all!

“I always remember how excited I was, looking out of a window, and seeing freshly fallen snow. I find it totally compelling. It brings out the eternal child in all of us. I don’t believe anybody can resist going outdoors to walk on virginal snow. I have tried to capture the idea of walking through a forest in search of the perfect Christmas tree, covered in bed of pure, untouched snow – the contrast of the soft, powdery quality of snow and its bright iciness, against the sweet balsamic warmth of the Fir Tree. I love the idea that when snow falls on a Christmas tree you don’t need any other ornamentation, its nature’s decoration.” – Roja Dove.
